The Party's Over! The age of cheap oil - the entombed sunlight that's been fueling our civilization -- is ending soon. Perhaps even within five years.

Cheap oil, natural gas gone, says forecaster. United States stands at 'the end of an era,' producers are told. June 25, 2003

Join us for a presentation and discussion of Our Energy Futures
Saturday, March 27, 2-4 pm

At North Park Village Nature Center,
5801 N. Pulaski Road, Chicago.

We will consider the likelyhood and consequences of oil and gas extraction peaking when renewable alternates seem inadequate to support expected US energy guzzling.

Our guide will be Richard Heinberg's "The Party's Over " (TPO) which starts off with "...in the end, it may be impossible for even a single nation to sustain industrialism as we have known it during the twentieth century. "TPO Pg1

He concludes "...these recommendations imply a nearly complete redesign of the human project. They describe a fundamental change of direction -- from the larger faster and more centralized to the smaller, slower and more locally based; from competition to cooperation; and from boundless growth to self limitation." TPO Pg 237

Peace through Permaculture: Choosing a Sustainable Way of Life, a post 9/11 reflection, explores this link between peace and living sustainably.

That article helped promote the Sustainable Jerusalem - Peaceful Permaculture Project.

So far, it seems unlikely that we can gently adapt to the coming era of declining energy availability, as the issue is not on the political horizon. No politicians have yet addressed it.

If we wait for market signals before redirecting our consumptive economy to renewables and conservation, it may well be too late to prevent major suffering during the transition.

Finally, books on the subject are beginning to gush out...
